After 12 matches without a win, Rustington Otters Youth Under 15’s gained a deserved first win of the season with a narrow 2-1 victory at Highdown Colts. In a tight first half with few chances, Highdown took the lead with a goal by Michael Connolly after 20 minutes and held it until half-time. After the break, Otters began to dominate and were rewarded with an equaliser when Matt Firkins scored direct from a corner. Buoyed by this, Otters pressed forward and Firkins scored a second goal when he converted a Jack Hawkins flick-on. Further chances were spurned and Highdown staged a late rally, but Otters defence, superbly marshalled by Will Osborne and Ben Taylor, held firm for the elusive win.
This success follows a new sponsorship deal with Dizzy, a local charity raising awareness about diabetes and offering support to sufferers of this major disease. Manager Mary Klanczkowski said, “After 7 years of using hand-me-down shirts we were delighted to be offered a brand new kit, which would be helping to promote such a good cause. It boosted the players’ morale following the disappointing start to the season and we are now looking forward to more success in the New Year.” More information about the work of Dizzy can be found on their website www.dizzy.org.uk
